This week we are learning about letters “p” and “j.” To celebrate, please send your child in their PJ’s on Friday, October 24.

Dry Erase boards

To help learn the letters "e" and "r" this week, we have been writing the letters on dry erase boards. Students learn where the lines of the letters go by using the lines (sky line, plane line, grass line, and worm line).

What begins with "r"?

We made a list of words that begin with "r" on the activboard this afternoon. The children came up with a lot of words, and then wrote them in their beginning sound journal.

We have been learning letters "r" and "e" in fundations this week.

Do I know my letters and sight words?

Each student in the class is working on being responsible for their own learning. Part of this is students understanding what they need to learn, and making steps toward that goal.

One of our goals is that students will identify all lower case letters as well as their sounds by the end of November. Each student has an assessment folder. We work together to fill out what they know and what they are working on. When we sit together, the student circles a letter they have identified correctly, and put a line through it if the sound is accurate. This has been great for students to see what they already know, and what they are working on.

(We will be using this folder for sight words as well as identifying numerals 1-20.)

Math manipulatives

This week in math, we are beginning Topic 4: Comparing numbers to 10. We began by making comparisons to the number 5. Students are identifying if the number is greater than or less than 5. We learn these new concepts through visual examples, discussion, using manipulatives (red and yellow counters in this lesson), and problem solving skills.

Activity to try at home: Give your child a number between 0-10. Ask them if it is greater than or less than 5. They could even compare the two sets using a favorite toy at home, such as lego guys or cars.

Fire Safety Assembly

 

The kindergarteners attended a fire safety assembly put on by the Avon Lake fire department. 

Fire Safety Week

We have been learning about fire safety this week. Mrs. B. brought in some special firefighter gear in a mystery bag today. She gave the children opportunities to guess what was in the bag. Then she showed them the end of a real fire hose and a real firefighter glove. The kids were so excited to pass the items around. They were shocked at the weight of the fire hose!
