Halloween stations

We had fun working at 4 different Halloween themed stations today. Nothing like some fun work to get our week headed in the right direction!

Leaf investigation

We collected leaves from our nature hike field trip. We have been using these leaves to make detailed leaf drawing, measured the leaves, and counted how many seconds it took the leaf to drop to the ground.

Lake Erie Nature and Science Center Hike

We had a great time on our nature hike today! The children used their five senses to observe the environment around them. We smelled leaves from certain trees, found animal tracks in the ground, made observations about different types of trees, found a salamander, and touched slugs and worms! We all collected leaves to do classroom activities with this week.

Work stations

The children were excited about our new work stations this week. We are working a lot with our September sight words and counting groups of objects. This week, children are finding hidden pictures in the room and writing the amount on a recording sheet. They are building sight words by using building blocks as well as magnetic tiles.

Brown Bear

This week we are focusing on the classic: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? We colored animals and worked in small groups to order the animals according to the story. They also sorted the animals by real and pretend. We will be using these animals to create scenes and do more story retelling.

Work stations

Many of our work stations this week are focusing on our book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We are matching letters, counting letters in our names, finding hidden letters in the classroom, sorting letters and words, and matching numbers.
During our work station time this week, I have been working with students to figure out their reading level.

Trees

This week, we are focusing on the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We practiced cutting out our tree trunk, ripping tissue paper for the leaves, and finding the letters to build our names.

Reading buddies

We are learning how to read successfully with a partner. Today we practiced our emergent reader that goes along with the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom book. The children took turns reading and listening to their partner. I hope they will share their reading skills with you at home!

As you can tell, some of the coziest places to read may be under tables. :-)

Mystery readers

These are two of our mystery readers. We are so excited for more readers next week! Hopefully we can do more sign ups in October.

Story

As part of our Fundations program, we tell stories about our owl, Echo. We have been working with a story: Echo finds dinner. Today the children helped to narrate and act out the story. After that, we used paper to draw about the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

Fun while we learn!

During our workstations this afternoon, students put together sequencing puzzles, built towers, worked with pattern blocks, wrote words on magna doodles, and practiced writing our friend's names on dry erase boards.

Ways to make 5

In math, we worked on combinations of 5.

Name painting

Our book focus this week is Chrysanthemum. This is a story about a little mouse who feels uncomfortable about her very long name. One of the ways we feel proud of our own name was fingerpainting it today! We also graphed how many letters were in our name and made comparisons with our peers.

Work stations

We have daily work stations in the afternoon. The station below is called "write the room" when they use dry erase boards to write words and letters in the classroom.
The next station was rolling the dice to color in the matching numeral.
They also had the chance to play "spill the beans" and record numbers.

The children did a great job sorting by beginning sounds. What a busy group of kids!!
