Students were using dry erase cards to match a set with the correct numeral.

Students are rolling playdoh numeral.

Math review stations

We are wrapping up our math topic on more, fewer, and same as. We have also been learning how to put numbers in order. During work at our math stations today, several teachers were working with small groups while many children were able to work on extra practice and enrichment stations.

FUNdations lesson

We did some letter review using a push pin to poke the letters we have learned today. The children really enjoyed the activity, they even began making their own pictures to poke at!

Below is a picture of a small group working on coloring pictures yellow if the beginning sound was "i". Then they used green if the picture began with "u".

Fun with literacy!

The students have really enjoyed building a character called "Mat Man." We sing a song as we use the wooden pieces to build him from top to bottom. The children were able to use the wooden pieces to practice building letters today.

During FUNdations this week, we introduced letters "a"and "g." Below is a picture of one student leading the class while we practice our sounds.

Work stations

This week in workstations, we have several activities to enrich our literacy experience.

Here is a student playing "roll a sight word."

This student is building letters using Legos.

She is matching beginning sounds using letter tiles.

Students have been logging into their own user profile for a computer program called Odyssey. The activities are customized at each child's individual learning level. We will be giving parents more information on how to log in at home in a few weeks.

Learning through play!!

Every day we have time for centers. The children were making playdoh food to sell at the pretend store, building with Legos, racing cars, and drawing pictures. They are learning many social as well as academic skills during this time.

Visit from Dr. Barlow

The children had a special guest speaker today. Dr. Barlow spoke to the children about the upcoming "buddy bench" which will be introduced at our first all school assembly in October. The buddy bench is a place for children to sit on the playground when they need a friend to play with. All students will be learning how to ask children to play when they see someone sitting on the buddy bench. The children are learning that they CAN make a difference!!

Friday Fun Math Stations!!

Students were able to explore a variety of hands on math games at their own pace today. We will be doing these stations every Friday.

Below is a picture of the students playing a bear number matching game.

One student was exploring with math pentominoes.

One student sorted pattern blocks, and then wrote the numeral to show how many of each shape.

Another child was rolling the dice and drawing a set.

Ordering numbers

As the introduction to the math lesson, we put our numbers 0-5 in order. Students decided where then numbers should go and give reasons for their answers.

Writing "i" and "u"

We practiced correct letter formation of i and u today. I wrote it on the dry erase poster and they echoed my writing. They all wrote very well!

Little mouse letter game

The children enjoy playing the letter game where they take turns hiding a little mouse under the house. Children have to guess which house he is behind by naming the letter. We are using letters we have learned in FUNdations.

Check the box with more

Students have been learning about "more" and "fewer". They filled in sets to make comparisons. Then they checked the box with more.

Writing with the book: The Secret Birthday Message

During writer's workshop, we eat the book The Secret Birthday Message. The story is centered around shapes and finding clues throughout the story. After the story, the children told me a shape and created a picture based on the shape. Then we wrote some words about their picture on their page. They practiced writing and sounding out their words.

"Echo finds Dinner"

As part of our FUNdations curriculum, we do stories to work on reading comprehension and answering questions about the story. We heard the story of Echo the owl looking for her food this week. We have been taking turns acting out the story. This afternoon, we even had some children retelling the story as their classmates acted it out.

Ask your child about Echo. Where was she? What did she eat? How did she feel at the end of the story?

Art fun in the classroom

During centers this afternoon, children had the option to use stickers and paint stampers. The students were practicing sharing with their peers. We practiced saying, "can I please have a turn when you are done." This helped many children to take turns with the materials.

"Spill the beans" math game

Students learned a new math game today. They started with 5 beans (green on one side and white on the other). They "spilled the beans" and counted the number of green beans to fill in on the graph. They were able to practice one to one correspondence with counting objects, graphing skills, and numeral writing.
